Ms Lau (F/41), a teacher, came for eye examination, complaining persistent blurry near vision recently.
Examination showed that her new power is:
R: -7.00/-0.50×175 (6/6)
L: -8.00/-0.50×180 (6/6)
Add: +1.25 (N5@40cm)
Ms Lau’s own glasses is a single vision (single power) of 050 lower power than the new power. When starting to have reading power, we can still manage to use single power to see far & near.. that’s by lowering your far power so that we can still manage to see near. When we lower our far power by 050, it is as if we have +050 to help see near vision. But your far vision will not be as sharp as the full power. We will let you compare and you can decide based on your expectation and preference as everyone is different.
For us myopic/shortsighted who are entering presbyopia, who are starting to have reading power, the options are:
1. A balanced single power – you compromise a bit sharpness from far vision and compromise a bit from near vision to still manage to see far & near, with a single vision lens
2. A separate pair of reading glasses for your near work – you can choose one power or two power depending on your near vision requirement
3. Multifocal – you have three different power in a multifocal lens in a single pair of glasses
We will prompt your visual requirement & ask you about your visual lifestyle. These will enable us to suggest and tailor suitable lenses according to your needs so that you are able to do everything possible without being set back by poor vision that can actually be fully corrected to see.
Ms Lau’s own glasses is of a balanced single power.. now that she complains blurry near vision is because her near power has increased and the balanced power can no longer give satisfactory vision to her. So, due to the nature of her work that she needs to look at her students and to look at near material at the same time, it is not possible for her to change into her reading glasses when she looks at near material and to change into her glasses to see far at her students. So, Ms Lau has chosen a pair of multifocal glasses that enables her from seeing far to seeing near simultaneously clear.
For multifocal lenses, we have this Digital lens that we have prescribed for Ms Lau. Digital lens is like a Remove class before you enter Form 1. As multifocal has three power that progressively changes its power from far power to near power, it has blur area at both sides of your lens.. and this may make you feeling slightly different/dizzy.. so we have this Digital lens, this Remove class for easy adaptation as well as to ease your transition into multifocal lens later.
