Why is Grandma Feeling so Anxious About her Vision with Cataract?

Grandma is anxious about having to go for cataract surgery!

SURGERY on my EYE! That sounds scary!

During a routine eye examination, your eye care practitioner will let you know the status of your vision. When cataract has blocked your vision significantly in which you are unable to see all smaller lines up until the forth or fifth smallest line for your far vision, then we will advise you to see an eye doctor/ophthalmologist for cataract surgery.

The right time for you to go for cataract surgery also depends on your vision demand, occupational demand and personal preference.

Some might find their vision very disturbing & unbearable even when they just lose one or two smallest lines. Others may be having it just fine losing the few smaller lines as they said “I don’t need to see such small far and near prints” in their everyday life. If your job requires you to have clear distinct vision at far/near, then you may opt for cataract surgery even before it blocks your vision up until the forth or fifth smallest lines.

Also, everyone has his/her own blur threshold that they can bear for vision blurriness, like our threshold for pain, some can ‘tahan sakit’ more than others.

Be sure to share what you have in your mind, the worries that you have, the uncertainties that lingers in your mind, we will address your concern so that you are completely in understanding of the status of your eyes. So, it all boils down to each individual, which factor is of your utmost concern/priority.

When cataract has blocked your vision up until the forth/fifth smallest lines, you need to see eye doctor for cataract surgery. Delaying cataract surgery is no good. As cataract that has grown sooo thick/densed can actually lead to another eye condition called glaucoma. Glaucoma is high pressure in your eye that will spoil your eye nerve which can cause blindness.

All in all, an annual eye examination is very important so that we know the status of our eyes and we can monitor for progression for any eye conditions. We will refer you to eye doctor/ophthalmologist accordingly and you may visit your preferred ophthalmologist and get comfortable with him/her before you proceed with the cataract surgery.

Blindness is preventable.

Let’s work hand in hand in making vision count for you by:

  1. taking good care of your general health
  2. take your systemic medication as prescribed by your doctor
  3. stay active by indulging in doing things that you like ie. gardening, taichi, yoga, brisk walking to the park to chitchat with friends
