What is this Cataract that makes Grandma so anxious?

Cataract is the yellowish of our natural lens inside our eyes. In nature, our natural lens is clear & transparent. When we are exposed to sunlight that has ultraviolet(UV), our natural lens helps to filter UV from harming the back part of our eye – consisting of our eye nerves & retina. Retina is like screen TV that enables us to see. So, after all these years of absorbing & filtering UV, the lens now has turned yellowish and becomes slightly opaque (so much love in God’s creation) <3

When you look through this yellowish lens, you find that your vision is blurry, yellowish and a lot of scattering light/’silau’. Why?

  1. Vision is blurry – because yellowish lens blocks light & we need light in order for us to see; light is blocked so you see blurry vision
  2. Vision is glaring/‘silau’ – because light cannot go through your slightly opaque, yellowish lens, so light scatters all around hence you see very glaring/’silau’
  3. You have astigmatism now – because as our natural lens get yellowish, it will become thicker thus inducing astigmatism power/‘rabun silau’

Nowadays, community are more aware & concerned about his/her vision with cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration. This shows that the eye health messages that are delivered by all eye care practitioners reaching the community well. Yes, we must continue to educate and not only to bring about comprehensive eye examination, but also comprehensive community eye awareness on eye health to everyone.

By knowing the status of your eye, you can play a greater role in safeguarding your eye & vision and what you can do to slow the progression of the eye conditions/eye diseases. Probably we cannot prevent it entirely when we are already diagnosed with an eye condition, but you can do something about it to slow the progression. For example, we take cataract. All of us will have cataract upon old age. Some have it very thick/densed faster, some have it yellowish/thicker slower. The more you are exposed to sunlight, the faster your lens becomes yellowish & thicker. Simply wearing sunglasses when you are outdoors will help slow the progression of your cataract.

So, glam it with a pair of sunglasses whenever you are out & about regardless of age. A pair of sunglasses is a necessity to our eyes!

Glam it, Shield it, Protect it!
