The Story of Grandma & Me

Viza & Jivan’s grandma 73yo came for an annual eye examination. She has worn her current glasses for 2.5 years. She is particularly concerned about her vision with cataract and whether or not her vision is optimum with her current bifocal glasses (bifocal is see far & see near glasses with a pocket at bottom of lens; pocket is the lens portion of her near power in order for her to see near). She feels her eyes are itchy sometimes and she does complain of having headache and being tension recently.

Upon examination, her long sighted powers have increased slightly in both eyes and now there is astigmatism/‘rabun silau’/“san guang” in both eyes. I explained on the power difference between spectacle power and new power that I have written down on a paper for grandma to see easily.

Do I need a new pair of glasses? Grandma asked. And I said, the difference between your current and new power is what I let you compare to see just now. So it’s all depend on you if you want to have a new pair of glasses with the new vision. Prior to that, she has shown me a doctor referral letter requesting for a subjective refraction for her. I guess grandma is anxious about her vision with cataract so I reassured her that the power of her current pair of glasses is still fine.

She was looking so happy and had a wide smile on her face before she left. Happy to be able to make her smile:)
