Uncle Ali came previously & has made a pair of reading glasses with +800 to be used with a magnifier. Uncle Ali was diagnosed with Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and he has cataract in both eyes too. Previously, he has consulted with his ophthalmologist & was told that even after cataract operation with implantation of new lens, the chance of him seeing better is 50-50 due to his macular degeneration in which vision lost cannot be regained.
Uncle Ali came to try telescope for identification of bus/LRT number. We have 4x & 8x telescopes but it was unsuccessful due to poor vision at far. He is seeing the largest letter on chart 6/120 blurry. He absolutely loves his bigger screen of the new 3x magnifier with light. It helps him to see his phone more comfortably on top of his +800 reading glass.
Magnifiers can be purchased from Malaysian Association of Blinds (MAB) in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. If you would like to try out these low vision devices, you may drop by our practice or alternatively to visit MAB & purchase straight from there. Uncle Ali would still need to go to his ophthalmologist for follow-up accordingly. When asked about how many cigarettes that he smokes in a day now, he said “beberapa batang saje”.. uncle has been smoking lesser & lesser and that’s good for his AMD as well as his general health. He said he still wishes to ride bike.. I was fast to say “aiyo.. tak mau la uncle”.. on safety concern.. in which he was fast to say “panggil orang bawa, saya duduk” hahaha.. uncle is fast, beat over me! Happy seeing uncle in good form❤️
