First Time Multifocal Wearer?

Mr Ong (M/46) came for eye examination, complaining of blurry near vision without glasses. He has never worn any glasses before.

Upon examination, his power is:
R: PL (6/6)
L: PL (6/6)
Addition: +1.25 to +1.50 (N5@40cm)

Mr Ong has perfect vision seeing far, PL is plano, having no power for his far vision and he can see the smallest line 6/6 vision on testing chart. He has reading power now and he wants a single pair of glasses for everyday use as he does not want the hassle of putting on his reading glasses to see near and to remove his glasses the next moment when he sees far. Working indoor, he needs to navigate around in his office the whole day, so he wants to have a single pair of glasses from seeing far to seeing near clearly.. that is no other than having a pair of multifocal glasses.

Multifocal lens has three main different power – far power, intermediate power & near power. Top portion of lens is power for far vision, middle portion is power to see intermediate vision like computer & bottom portion of lens is reading power. As far power at top of lens changes progressively into reading power at bottom of lens, this power change induces distortion/blur area at both sides of the lens.

For easy understanding, multifocal lens has three main designs namely entry design, mid design and premium design. We explain these designs in generations.. starting with 2nd generation all the way up to 7 or 8th generation. 2nd generation is earlier generation of multifocal lens, technology was not yet great so the clear area seen is constricted to mainly centre portion of lens with bigger blur area/distortion at sides of lens. As technology gets better & improved, lens design advances from 2nd generation to 3rd to 4th all the way to 7th or 8th generation (also depend on how your eye care practitioner categorises each lens design).

And as the lens design gets better, the wider field of view of clear vision you can see, and the more comfortable you find wearing your multifocal lenses. Having big blur area at sides of lens, you will feel swim effect/dizzy especially when you move. Therefore, we always love to ask about your lifestyle.. if you sit facing computer most of your time, probably entry level can work for you.. as you just want to see far and also to be able to see near at the same time. Comparatively, if you need to move around, it is recommended to use a better lens design because when you move, the blur area brings about swim effect/feeling of dizziness to you. And also, it would depend on your tolerance/expectation on your vision too.

Mr Ong needs to keep moving, so he is not keen on having the entry level design, so we have proposed him to have Relax lenses or we call them the Remove class before you actually go into Form 1(multifocal lens). Relax lens also has three power but with smoother distortion, this will ease your adaptation and to make your transition into wearing multifocal lens later on easier. The highest reading power of Relax lens is +1.32 of Hoya Sync III, so we have prescribed these lenses for him. The first time around wearing these lenses, you will feel slightly different, you might feel a little of the swim effect. But after a day or two, you will be fast adapted to them.

Mr Ong has never worn any glasses before. He is hesitant about putting on a pair of glasses the whole day. He has chosen Tokyo Uni titanium frame giving him light & comfortable feel on top of the durability of frame as he may be taking stocks in & out at work, to withstand from any accident the best possible. Titanium is of material that is used in aircraft, having properties of excellent corrosion resistance, light weight & high strength, making titanium frame well sought & liked by all. A blend of style, practicality & comfort, Tokyo Uni won his heart.

Pairing to the frame is Japanese lens of Hoya Sync III with HVLL coating, an award winning coating for its durability. On top of it.. is Blue Control, an additional blue light protection. Research has not shown that blue light from digital devices can spoil our eyes, so it is on you to decide whether or not you want to get this Blue Control as an additional protection to your eyes.

Happy to hear that the glasses are “good and they work”!

Thank you Mr Ong & Mrs Ong for your trust & support!?
