Eye Rubbing in Children?

  • Post author:

Kleoe (F/8) had her right eye slightly swollen with no pain & no eye discharge last week. She complained her eye was very itchy and she kept wanting to rub her eye. She does not normally rub her eyes.

Microscope examination showed redness & bumps underneath her eyelid that may be due to triggering allergen. We suspected dust as she had gone into the store room earlier in the day.

We put non-preserved artificial tears generously for two days and the swelling subsided. After each instillation of eye drop, she felt much better and she did not rub her eye. Should you find your child rubbing his/her eyes on certain day, use non-preserved artificial tears.. it helps clear the triggering allergen that causes the itchiness. Just so that they do not rub their eyes. If they do rub their eyes constantly every day, you may bring them over to us & let us have a look or alternatively to bring them to eye doctor/ophthalmologist.

Top: Day 1 and Bottom: Day 2 (better)

Constant eye rubbing in children may lead to high astigmatism.. which is the last thing that we want due to eye rubbing.
