Andrea (F/20) came for eye examination, with her existing glasses, she is seeing fine for far & near vision. She does feel a bit dry in which she uses preserved artificial tears sometimes.
Upon examination, she has shortsighted power of -4.25 & -3.75 in right & left eye respectively. The power of her existing glasses is almost the same, so she can continue wearing her existing glasses. Now she wants to try wearing colour contact lens.
She reported having slight dry eye in which we check with fluorescein (fluorescein is for dry eye evaluation). We detected dry spots on lower horizontal midline of both her eyes. This is due to incomplete eye blink whereby the mid horizontal area is exposed due to eyes are not fully closed during blinking. We have advised her to practise conscious full eye blink and to use non-preservative artificial tears when she feels dry with contact lens.
Andrea is first-time contact lens wearer but she can handle removal & insertion very well even right from the beginning when we first taught her. Knowing that contact lens wear is not daunting at all, it comes naturally with practice. Contact lens wear also serves specific purpose such as sports or for cosmetic reason as well. For some sports, coach may require you to wear contact lens. In cases like this, you may opt for daily disposable contact lens whereby you open a fresh pair for each use, especially if you have only once or twice training in a week. Or if you want to wear colour cosmetic contact lens to function/dinner once in a while, you can go for daily disposable colour contact lens. Daily disposable will be more hygienic in these situations. It all depends on your usage & needs.
Andrea plans to wear every day for the whole day beyond 12 hours, we prescribe Miacare Confidence colour monthly disposable lenses. Miacare is high oxygen lens, of silicone hydrogel that is suitable for long wearing hours. Alternatively, if you only wear it during office hour, you may go for hydrogel lens that is suitable for wearing hours about 9 hours. We want to wear the lenses within the stipulated hours as we do not want our cornea (front part of eye) to be lack of oxygen if lens were to be worn beyond intended hours.
