Ms Ng (F/46), a school teacher, came in with complaint of seeing near slightly blurry with her current multifocal glasses. She has been doing a lot of computer works recently due to MCO. Preparing school lessons in video, preparing exercises, liaising with all parents regarding online learning & homework, and the list goes on. She found that she could hardly see near clearly, in which she came for an eye examination and to make a new pair of spectacles to tackle the increasing near work. Upon examination, there is power increase in her far vision as well as her near vision.
New power:
R: +0.25/-0.25×80 (6/6)
L: +0.75/-0.75×45 (6/6)
Addition: +2.00 (N5@40cm)
Why do we still get power increase when we are in our 40s? Our lens can do auto-correct of some hyperopia power (power with + sign) when we are younger due to eye muscles that are still strong. As we get older, our lens lose elasticity, so auto correct (for far vision) does not work anymore. The + power will need to be supplied by spectacles lenses in order for us to see it clearly, and we find our plus power(or hyperopia) keeps increasing or minus power(or myopia) keeps decreasing when we age. When there is power increase in both your far & near vision, you will need a bit of time to get used to the new multifocal lenses as more power is compacted into your lens as compared to your previous lower power.
Ms Ng has been having dry eyes, she is feeling burning & stinging sensation these days. When we are concentrating in finishing our tasks, we tend to blink lesser. She will need to have more conscious blinks in between her computer work and to moist her eyes using non-preservative artificial tears. Not forgetting to have regular breaks in between tasks, our golden rule of 20-20-20 rule.
Despite being dedicated in her work, Ms Ng has been discouraged by some comments. You have done way beyond expected.. as we are all in this unprecedented situation together. Totally in awe with your spirit, keep up your great work!????
