Ms Kong (F/ 55) came for eye examination, with complaint of dry eyes with sticky, watery eyes since many years ago. She has a pair of glasses for far vision that she uses for driving and a separate pair of reading glasses in which she no longer uses them. She can still manage to see near without any glasses.

Vision without glasses
R: 6/60
L: 6/12-

Examination shows:
R: -2.75/-0.50×110 (6/6) (R: dominant right eye)
L: -1.25 (6/6)
Add: +2.25 (N5@40cm)

Ms Kong’s power for far vision is almost the same as her existing glasses. She has shortsighted power of 275 & 125 in right & left eye respectively with mild astigmatism of 050 in right eye. Without glasses, her uncorrected shortsighted power, as if, has become her reading power enabling her to see near.. but looking far away will be blurry. When she wears her shortsighted glasses, her far vision is fine.. but she would not be able to see near as she has reading power now.. in which she needs to remove shortsighted glasses in order to see near. Putting on & removing glasses would do fine but sometimes, we just do not want that hassle, given a choice. Having a pair of multifocal glasses enabling us to see far to near simultaneously clear, to bring about improvement in our quality of life.. that’s great! Near vision from multifocal glasses will be better & more comfortable as compared to seeing near by removing shortsighted glasses.

Ms Kong has meibomian gland dysfunction, we can see some bubbles on lid margin. We advise on lid hygiene & warm compression, to wash and rub eyelashes & lids margin with diluted baby shampoo. This condition will slowly improve with time, love & patience using this home therapy. Alternatively, we can visit eye specialist doctor/ophthalmologist to use dry eye equipment to target this condition in improving the dry eye condition.

Meibomian gland dysfunction on left eye
Very mild cataract in both eyes

Ms Kong has very mild cataract as she still can achieve 6/6 vision. We will monitor her cataract & vision yearly and we will refer for cataract surgery once cataract has matured or when cataract causes vision complaint like blurry, cloudy & glaring that is unbearable.

We will see Ms Kong after a few weeks of lid hygiene & warm compression to check on her dry eyes.
