Mr Ngai (M/48) came for eye examination, complaining blurry far vision. The coating of his glasses has peeled off. He has worn his glasses for more than 4-5 years.
Examination showed that:
R: -6.25 (6/6)
L: -6.75 (6/6)
Add: +2.00 (N5@40cm)
His shortsighted power has increased 100 in both eyes. So, it is an increment of 025 in a year. At work, he handles electronic component in which he needs to see small, tiny component very upclose and he will remove glasses to see. Due to nature of his work, this may contribute to his power increment. We know that seeing very near to our eyes is no good, as our eyes need to work harder to auto focus more in order for us to see. Also, glasses with non-updated power/not enough power may put our eyes under stress as we strain our eyes to help to see better. And his eye health is all optimum, we recommend wearing a fit-over, a pair of sunglasses that you can wear on top of your glasses whenever he is outdoors as fit-over provides side coverage from UV.
Lens is actually protected with a coating. Lens coating is particularly sensitive to chemical, so washing the lenses with body shampoo or hair shampoo during shower leads to coating peel. Especially for those with high power, we may want to wear glasses to shower too and conveniently wash them as well. You may wash with water only and to immediately dry the glasses right after shower. Leaving your lens to air dry itself will leave water mark/stain on the lens. Best to to clean the lenses with lens spray or lens wipe that is intended for the use of spectacle lenses. Or alternatively you are welcome to visit us to service your glasses regularly. If we have regular maintenance of our glasses, they are sparklingly clean & stay in good condition. When you come in, we can spot check on how you take care of your glasses???? Let’s say if we pick up any clue from your lenses that may lead to potential damage of coating, then we will be able to reinforce proper lens care.
