Impact Resistance Multifocal Lenses?

  • Post author:

Mr Chiew came for eye examination, he had retinal detachment in his left eye a few years ago and his left eye is non-seeing eye. He wears a pair of reading glasses of +2.00 for near and the vision is fine.

Examination shows:
R: +1.25/-0.50×55 (6/6)
L: To balance
Add: +2.25 (N5@40cm)

Mr Chiew has longsighted power of 125 & mild astigmatism of 050 in right eye and we put Plano(no power) in his left eye. As he has not worn any glasses to see far, we let him compare seeing far with & without power, to see the difference. Without glasses, he can still see but vision is slightly fuzzy especially on those smaller words.

According to Mr Chiew, he had surgery a few times on his left eye but could not reverse the visual loss. It is of paramount importance that you go for a check immediately should you notice any slightest change in your vision or any form of vision impairment. Just go to your nearby eye care practitioner & ask about it. We have a duty to refer you to eye doctor/ophthalmologist according to the severity of your eye condition. Or alternatively to go to see ophthalmologist at once.

Mr Chiew has his reading glasses sit lower on nose bridge so that he does not see through reading glasses when seeing far, otherwise far vision will be blurry. But sometimes, we just do not want that “look”?

Now, he has opted for a pair of multifocal glasses. Like Mr Chiew, he has not worn any glasses full-time before, so a few things we need to discuss with him so that we know what he wants and he knows what to expect with the new multifocal glasses.

  1. He will wear his multifocal glasses full-time
    1. in order to see clear vision simultaneously clear from far to near
    2. to enjoy the convenience of a single pair of glasses and he does not need to put on glasses & remove glasses repeatedly anymore
  2. We cannot compare the field of view of reading glasses with multifocal glasses
    1. the whole lens of reading glasses is just 1 power, whereas your multifocal lenses have 3 power in a single lens in which power changes from top to bottom: top power is your far power.. to middle is your intermediate power for computer.. to bottom is your reading power (the closer we need to see, the higher the reading power needed, so seeing computer is of lesser power than seeing hp)
    2. reading glasses give you just 1 power to see clear within a specific distance range only, as compared to multifocal glasses that allow you seeing computer to seeing hp clear & comfortably
  3. The design of multifocal lenses
    1. The better the multifocal design is, the wider the reading portion, and the more comfortable using the glasses
    2. It also depends on your lifestyle, preference, expectation & budget – some may be fine with beginner design, some may only be able to adapt & use premium design, as each individual is different

Having all your choices in mind will we be able to advise & prescribe suitable lenses that suit you. Personalised lenses that are made to customise to you.

Mr Chiew has given a first time try on multifocal glasses with a plastic frame of Nomono pairing with Hoya Dynamic Summit Phoenix material 1.53 in impact resistance lenses to give good protection over the good eye.

Happy to see that you are wearing your multifocal glasses already, Mr Chiew?

Thank you Mr Chiew for your trust & support!?
