Liong (M/23) came in July, non-spectacle wearer, complaining blurry far vision since long time ago.
Power prescribed in July was:
R: -3.75/-3.00×15 (6/12-)
L: -1.75/-3.00×180 (6/7.5-)
Liong came back for follow up the first time with not much improvement in his vision. When asked whether or not he put on his glasses full time, he said he did not. He found it dizzy & heavy-headed wearing the glasses. It usually takes a bit of time to get adapted to the power, considering very high astigmatism & he also has anisometropia, power difference of 200 between both eyes. We advised that should he feel dizzy, he can remove glasses & close his eyes for a while before putting on his glasses to try again and again.. until he can get used to his power.
Liong just came back for follow up and examination showed:
R: -4.25/-3.75×15 (6/9+)
L: -1.75/-3.00×180 (6/6-)

There is vision improvement this time around as he has worn his glasses full time now, from time of waking and only remove glasses when he goes to bed. Now we will update the power of his right eye to optimise his vision, and still having amblyopia/lazy eye in this eye. Also, his 3D vision/stereopsis is very low giving poor depth perception, that is due to his amblyopic eye/lazy eye.
Liong will wear the new power for another 4-6weeks and to come back for follow up. By then, we will see whether or not his vision is further improved to achieving 6/6 vision. Normally, lazy eye can pick up itself after full-time glasses wearing of optimum power for children below 12years old and the result is very encouraging. Otherwise, if lazy eye in right eye still persists, we will try with vision therapy and see.
Liong also has pterygium on his left eye, having pterygium at this age is not so common. We asked if he was always in the sun during his childhood.. in which he mentioned about going for fishing without sunglasses all the time previously. This may be the reason of his pterygium.
This brings about the importance of wearing sunglasses when you are outdoors, be it for sports, recreation or your general everyday use. Polarised sunglasses are good for fishing, as it cuts off the blinding glare. Sunglasses can be made with your power/prescription too. Let’s care for our eyes and protect our eyes more!
